C++ Founder talks to Harvey Nash TV
As far as technology royalty goes, Bjarne Stroustrup takes the crown every time.
As the inventor of one of the most influential and widely adopted programming languages in the world, he has become somewhat of a rock star to aspiring technologists, developers and academics.
On the 28th and 29th April, 2014, Harvey Nash and Morgan Stanley collaborated to host two sell-out events in which Bjarne shared his latest developments in C++. For a short time Scotland was taken over by a host of technology enthusiasts as software engineers, students, technologists and IT leaders all gathered to listen to someone who, for many, has had a great influence over their careers.
As queues formed around the block, many others turned up to the event, anxiously hoping to squeeze into the lecture theatre to hear Bjarne speak. The excitement was palpable as people of all ages, careers and backgrounds huddled together, thrilled to be part of one of the biggest and most high profile technology events ever to come to Scotland.
Harvey Nash was particularly delighted to welcome two of our youngest ever event attendees, as local secondary school pupils Fahim and Robbie, came to the event, textbooks clutched in hand, already starting their journeys in software development.
Born and raised in Denmark and now living in New York, Bjarne invented C++ early in his career, formulating the design criteria for a language that would influence generations of eager tech experts. He is the publisher of ‘The C++ Programming Language’, the most widely read of its kind, and has gone on to write seven other books, as well as numerous academic publications.
Despite his international acclaim and celebrity status within the technology world, Bjarne engaged with the audience on a personal level, starting his lectures by advising aspiring software developers to ‘learn at least two, but preferably five different languages to succeed in the technology industry. Rather than discuss programming in detail, Bjarne’s talk discussed the aims and constraints of C++ and the challenges all technologists face.
Bjarne was engaging and informative, speaking about the seminal language with clarity and ease. His talk was wide-ranging as he joked with the inventors of the world-famous game Grand Theft Auto (Rockstar North Games, GTA’s producer, is a local company) for developing such a violent game, (it must have been written in Java), then discussed career options with aspiring technologists as well as business strategy with CEOs.
Harvey Nash were extremely proud to host such a successful event that connected over 800 technologists and more than 100 companies to one another. We always aim to be leaders in our fields, markets and vertical technologies and so it was a delight to welcome the hugely influential Bjarne Stroustrup into a community of Scottish technology enthusiasts who are working hard to forge out the future of technology.
