Lack of technology expertise forces companies to think again

65% of respondents in the Harvey Nash and KPMG’s CIO survey report lack of competence and that resource challenges are delaying strategy work – the highest number reported since 2008.

It is hardly surprising for IT managers that relevant knowledge and skills are in short supply in the market. Several companies are solving some of these challenges through outsourcing. Outsourcing which is usually attributed to traditional cost saving methods are more often in these cases allowing companies access to resources enabling implementation of defined company strategies. In addition, several companies have successfully experimented with automation – especially within testing, service desk and development.

However, this does not solve the screaming need for qualified employees. On the contrary, around 50% of the companies have ambitions to increase staffing – this combined with the fact that more companies will outsource less in the future. In an environment where innovation, being close to the customer, and the fact that data and analysis are gaining importance, the CIO needs to consider more precisely which skills are required and needed on the ’inside’ and ‘outside’.

“We still see a great need for data scientists and experienced architects, while at the same time ‘new’ roles where business understanding combined with technical understanding become more sought after. Examples of this are the resurgence of ‘sharp’ business architects, API Business Managers, AI managers and CPI Managers who will look at different opportunities for profitable collaboration with suppliers, customers and innovation / product development – then along the entire value chain,” says Jan Vermund Nilsen, Head of Technology and Digital at Harvey Nash Norway.
