CIO Event Bristol – What We Learnt
Thursday 17th November saw the second Bristol CIO Survey event at the beautiful new Bristol KPMG offices, thanks to so many of you for battling through the storms/roads/train delays to make it, we will endeavour to lay on more clement conditions next year!
With results presented by Harvey Nash’s Jonathan Mitchell and KPMG’s Adam Woodhouse along with the panel hosted by CEO Albert Ellis, the night was full of interesting insights from our survey and thought-provoking discussion led by our impressive panel.

What are the key things we’ve learnt from this year’s survey?
CIO Priorities Changing
The influence of IT leaders is seen to be growing as more CIOs now report to the CEO and sit on an executive board, whilst 67% expect the strategic influence of the CIO role to continue to grow. Their old priorities are changing as the CIO is taking more ownership for wider business change and interestingly spending less time on IT, in fact 4/10 CIOs now spend at least one day a week outside of IT.
Keeping CIO’s Awake
The top things worrying the CIO’s we surveyed were echoed throughout the Q & A session with our panel so are clearly big areas of concern at the moment:
CIO’s have responded to more major cyber-attacks in the last 2 years and worryingly more CIO’s we asked feel less prepared for security attacks than they did in 2014.
– Skill shortage
The IT skills shortage continues to grow, 65% report the skills shortage is holding them back (up from 59% last year) whilst 44% want to increase their team size next year showing the skills shortage is a serious problem.
– Project success
Project success rates are declining across the board, although infrastructure and cloud projects are seeing the most success. Offshoring and big data implementation are the biggest challenges, in fact only 42% of respondents reporting outsourcing project success.
The amount of CDOs has continued to grow with 1 in five organisations now employing a CDO and 35% have now developed an enterprise-wide digital strategy compared to 27% last year.
