London, 23 June 2016 – On the pivotal day of the EU Referendum, we held an intimate business breakfast in the exclusive surroundings of The Eight Members Club in Moorgate. As part of London Technology Week, this breakfast session looked at how IT leaders, HR Professionals and Resourcing Business Partners are finding innovative new ways to gain access to highly skilled tech people, as well as introducing the Harvey Nash Talent-IT Solution.
We were delighted to welcome attendees from a diverse range of organisations including The FT, TUI, Save The Children, Telegraph Media, Birkbeck College, CompTIA, IoD, Amido, St John’s Ambulance, UK Trade and Investment, Net-A-Porter, Attenda, Trouva, STEMX, Chicken Financial and Shopify.

Following a welcome note from Andy Heyes, Managing Director of Harvey Nash London Professional Recruitment, Kate Parker, Head of the Talent-IT programme, kicked off the session with some insights into some of the key ‘People, Skills and Talent’ data from the 2016 Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO survey.
Undoubtedly, what stood out most was the heightened skills shortage, compounded by retention concerns with 89% of CIO’s concerned about talent retention. Worryingly, skill shortage is at its highest level since 2007 with almost two thirds of IT leaders believing that a lack of talent will prevent their organisation from keeping up with the pace of change.
Mike Keyworth, one of the Co-founders of Monitise, followed this with a look into the challenges he faced when taking a six person start-up to a 1,400 strong, AIM listed global organisation. The main points included London as a hub to attract talent versus cost implication, Offshore Productivity Vs Cost Saving/Nearshore IP Protection and Site Leadership / Communications.
Next up to speak were Kim Fleming and Jess Verbruggen, part of the Talent Acquisition team at the Canadian based company, Shopify. They shed some light on the international perspective on inclusive recruitment to show what they are doing to increase diversity within the technology space.
They discussed some interesting methods including using ‘Life Stories’ rather than a traditional CV, some very focussed Boolean searching methods to identify a more diverse candidate pipeline and ensuring that all interviewers undergo unconscious bias training – something which we also do at Harvey Nash!
Simon Ratcliffe from Attender then spoke about the changing role of the CIO – how CIO’s are becoming ‘increasingly influential’ and are being ‘called upon to generate revenue in the face of critical skill shortages’. There were certainly a good number of people within the room with whom this issue resonated!
Kate Parker rounded off the morning with an overview of Harvey Nash’s exciting new solution to counter these skill shortage challenges.
Our Talent-IT proposition which combines bespoke training for career-shifters, graduates, returners to work and ex forces to with a cost effective temp to perm model. The key benefits of this solution are that it will help our clients to ‘grow their own’ talent, whilst reducing contractor costs and increasing workforce diversity.
There was a genuinely good level of interest and it felt like our audience left wanting more, at the end of some very lively debate and networking!
