The time when a CIO role mainly entailed responsibility for IT infrastructure and IT security is long gone. A successful CIO today also needs to shoulder leadership responsibilities and must have a clear sense of business acumen.

According to Charlotta’s experience, there is today a much stronger demand for IT managers with a thorough business understanding who are willing to take on a much larger responsibility for the company’s business success.

“IT Managers have a clear priority directly related to income generation for their company today,” says Charlotta Skogar. “The IT department does not work primarily with efficiency and cost savings but is seen as directly contributing to the work of creating competitive advantages and generating new revenue.”

IT organisations now have a dual role in ensuring the organisation’s productivity and securing the IT infrastructure while helping the organisation utilise technological advances to find smart business solutions and better engage its customers.

“The challenge that we see, and which usually recurs in the dialogues we have with candidates lies largely in the difficulty of finding a good balance between managing the more operational parts and the need to meet the more business-oriented strategic development work,” says Charlotta.

Our experience of the candidate market in IT and Tech is that most IT managers are open to developing within a leadership role to further their career, which bodes well for the market if we keep having young new abilities join the industry. We usually do not see a lack of competence in this segment, but rather one can point to a labour market out of sync. We often experience quite different expectations between employers and employees.

Some success factors that we consider important in the CIO role are:

  • Problem solver – ability to grasp different-minded opinions, be able to understand and handle different personalities and create order out of chaos.
  • Exploring innovative ideas – capacity to capture business ideas, create openness and transparency to promote growth and build commitment
  • Business acumen – understanding of the business and an ability to implement a digital business strategy
  • A keen eye for new opportunities – ability to convert problems into business opportunities
  • Responsibility – an openness to take on responsibility since IT is the basis for so much of today’s work processes
